Solomon, (HWV 67) è un oratorio in inglese di Georg Friedrich Händel. Il libretto , di anonimo, attualmente si pensa che possa essere stato scritto dal poeta/drammaturgo Moses Mendes (d.1758) [1] .
The plot is simple with Act 1 dealing with the inauguration of the newly completed temple, and ends with Solomon beckoning his Queen toward the cedar grove, where one suspects it is not just the 'amorous turtles' that 'love beneath the pleasing gloom'. This is one of two new recordings of Solomon to have been released recently, the other being on Harmonia Mundi in a performance directed by Daniel Reuss.Hitherto catalogue leaders in the field have been the 1984 Gardiner on Philips [412 612-2] which, like the current Reuss, has some cuts and the much later 1998 McCreesh on Archiv [459 688-2] which doesn’t. In Winton Dean’s monumental 1959 study of Handel’s oratorios, he described that Solomon is “full of the sights and sounds of nature”, and opined that it shows “a wonderful recrudescence of Handel’s creative power, which a contemporary critic might have supposed on the wane since Belshazzar.”Other Handelians might have more to say in praise of the oratorios composed between 1744 Zadok the Priest. Much of Handel’s reputation today rests on only a small body of his work, principally Messiah written in 1741, even though the total amount of music he composed was enormous.
